Nursing skills on a resume need evidence: the setting, your responsibility and how you used the skill. Select capabilities relevant to the position and accurate for your education, experience, registration and scope of practice. A long list of procedures does not establish competence.

Nursing skills to consider for your resume
- Assessment and observation: gathering relevant information, documenting findings and escalating concerns within your role.
- Care planning and evaluation: contributing to or coordinating care plans and reviewing progress within your responsibilities.
- Clinical care: tasks you are trained, competent and authorised to perform in the relevant setting.
- Documentation: accurate records that support continuity of care.
- Communication: clear handovers, listening and explaining information in a way the person can understand.
- Teamwork and prioritisation: coordinating with colleagues, recognising limits and seeking support.
- Patient education: supporting understanding and participation in care within your role.
Example nursing resume bullets
The following are fictional wording prompts, not a list of competencies every applicant should claim. Adapt them to your role and remove patient-identifying information.
Assessment and escalation
“Completed [relevant assessment] in [setting], documented observations and communicated changes to [appropriate clinician/team] in line with local procedures.”
Documentation and handover
“Maintained care records in [system] and provided structured handovers covering current needs, actions completed and outstanding follow-up.”
Patient communication
“Explained [care information within your role] using language suited to the person's needs, checked understanding and arranged further support when required.”
Teamwork
“Coordinated with [team members] to organise [care or discharge activity], clarified responsibilities and followed up agreed actions.”
Replace brackets with facts you can discuss at interview. If you have a supported quality-improvement outcome, identify your contribution and timeframe. Avoid unsupported claims that you prevented harm or independently achieved a team outcome.
Clinical skills and scope of practice
Be precise about what you performed, assisted with or observed. Do not turn supervised exposure into a claim of independent competence. Where a responsibility depends on training, assessment or authorisation, ensure your wording reflects your actual status. Use the position description and your professional records to check the application.
Do not assume that a task belongs to every RN, enrolled nurse or nurse practitioner. The NMBA's role and scope guidance is a starting point; your individual competence and workplace requirements also matter. This page does not provide instructions for performing clinical procedures.
Graduate nursing skills and placement experience
Label placements separately from employed nursing roles. Include the setting, dates and relevant learning or supervised responsibilities. For example: “During [placement], contributed to [activity] under [appropriate supervision], recorded [relevant information] and sought feedback on [skill].”
A placement example can show preparation, communication and reflection without implying you held an independent caseload. Keep registration and qualification status accurate and current.
Where to put nursing skills on your resume
Use a short skills section for relevant capabilities, then demonstrate the strongest ones in employment or placement bullets. Put qualifications, registration details requested by the employer and current training in clearly labelled sections. Match terminology to the advertisement where it describes your real experience.

Final accuracy check
Remove patient identifiers, verify dates and training status, and ask whether each skill is supported by a concrete example. Keep confidential workplace information out of the application. Choose a few relevant examples that show your contribution clearly.
