An ICU nurse resume should show your registered nurse background, critical care setting and relevant responsibilities. Make your current registration and training status clear, then describe clinical experience within your actual scope. The reader needs to understand both the unit you worked in and the work you personally performed.
ICU nurse resume example
Illustrative example: The following details are fictional. Use the structure with your own verified experience; do not copy the claims.
Professional profile
Registered nurse with experience in an adult intensive care unit, contributing to multidisciplinary care, structured handovers and family communication. Completed [relevant training] and experienced in [verified clinical responsibilities]. Seeking an ICU nursing role aligned with [specific unit or position requirements].
Experience: Registered Nurse — ICU, [Hospital], [dates]
- Provided nursing care within my assessed scope and the unit's policies, documenting observations and escalating changes through the required process.
- Contributed to multidisciplinary discussions by presenting relevant nursing observations and clarifying agreed actions.
- Used structured handovers to communicate current concerns, outstanding tasks and the agreed plan to the receiving nurse.
- Supported patients' families with clear communication and referred questions outside my role to the appropriate team member.
- Contributed to a review of handover documentation by collecting agreed audit information and discussing recurring omissions with the educator.
Registration, education and development
List your accurate registration status, nursing qualification and relevant completed education. Include course/provider details and dates where useful. Mark study in progress clearly. Do not import overseas certifications from an example unless you hold them and they are relevant to the application.
Describe your ICU experience precisely
State the setting: for example adult mixed, surgical or another intensive care context you have worked in. Explain your role and level of responsibility. Unit size can provide context, but it should not imply you cared for every patient in the unit.
For specialist equipment or therapies, distinguish between observed exposure, supervised practice and responsibilities you were assessed to perform. Include only what is accurate and relevant to the vacancy. This is a resume-writing guide, not a list of competencies that every ICU nurse must claim.
Turn responsibilities into evidence
A useful example explains the setting, your action and an appropriate result. For instance, a documentation project might show how you collected audit data, raised a recurring issue and helped trial a revised handover prompt. Describe the team's outcome and your contribution separately.
Do not invent reductions in mortality, infection rates or recovery times. If you have approved quality-improvement evidence, explain its measure and period accurately. Otherwise, describe the process or contribution without an unsupported percentage. Remove patient names and identifying case details.
Applying for your first ICU role
If you are moving from another nursing area, use your real role title and state the transition clearly. Show relevant experience with assessment, recognising changes, escalation, documentation and teamwork within your existing scope. Explain completed preparation and why the advertised development opportunity fits your goals.
A possible opening is: “Registered nurse with experience in [current setting], seeking an ICU transition role. Brings evidence of [relevant responsibilities] and has completed [actual preparation].” A placement or observation period should be labelled as such, rather than presented as independent ICU employment.
