Career Change Cover Letter Example & Adaptable Template

A career change cover letter explains why you want the new role and how your previous experience prepares you for its work. Make the connection explicit: name a requirement, give a real example from your background and explain how it transfers. You can be clear about changing fields without apologising for your career history.

Career change cover letter example

This fictional example shows a hospitality supervisor applying for a project support position. The organisation and experience are illustrative; use your own evidence.

Dear [Hiring Manager],

Re: Project Support Officer, [reference]

I am applying for the Project Support Officer position at [organisation]. Through coordinating events in hospitality, I have developed experience maintaining schedules, following up suppliers and communicating changes across a team. I want to apply these strengths in a project support role, particularly your advertised work coordinating community facilities projects.

As a hospitality supervisor, I coordinated the preparation schedule for a series of venue events. I maintained the task list, confirmed delivery times with suppliers and flagged delays to the venue manager. When a delivery date changed, I updated the schedule and checked the revised arrangements with the team. This helped us complete the remaining preparation before the event and gave everyone a clear view of their responsibilities.

I also prepared shift handover notes and maintained a log of outstanding customer requests. I checked that each item had a responsible person and followed up unresolved requests at the next handover. These habits would support the action tracking and accurate records described in your vacancy.

To prepare for the transition, I have completed [actual introductory training] and practised [specific tool or task]. I am ready to learn your project systems and would bring a reliable approach to coordination, communication and follow-through. My attached resume sets out my experience and training.

Thank you for considering my application. I welcome the opportunity to discuss how my background could support your team.

Kind regards,
[Name]

Why the example works

  • It names the destination: project support, rather than an undefined wish for a new challenge.
  • It builds a clear bridge: scheduling and supplier follow-up relate to the new role's coordination tasks.
  • It keeps the level accurate: the applicant supported delivery and escalated issues; they do not claim to have managed an entire project portfolio.
  • It shows preparation: actual completed learning is separated from systems they still need to learn.

Adaptable career change cover letter template

Opening: “I am applying for [role] at [organisation]. My experience in [previous field] has developed [relevant strengths], which connect with your need for [requirement]. I am making this move because [specific, positive reason].”

Evidence: “In [setting], I [your action] to address [task or problem]. This resulted in [supported outcome]. The experience is relevant to [responsibility in the new role].”

Preparation and close: “I have [completed preparation or accurately stated progress] and would bring [supported contribution]. Thank you for considering my application; I welcome the opportunity to discuss [role].”

You can combine short paragraphs with a few evidence bullets if that makes the letter easier to read. A hybrid format is an option, not an employer requirement. Follow the advertised instructions for length and format.

Choose transferable skills carefully

Translate the work, not just the job title. Teaching may provide evidence of explaining complex information; retail may show customer problem-solving; operations may show scheduling and record keeping. Select examples that actually match the new responsibilities. “Communication” alone is too broad: show the audience, action and purpose.

If there is a gap in your experience, describe relevant preparation honestly. A short course does not equal years of professional practice. Do not imply you meet an essential qualification if you do not; check the vacancy before applying.

What to leave out

Avoid a long account of dissatisfaction with your former industry. Keep the focus on the new employer and the contribution you can support. You do not need to disclose private circumstances to explain a change. Check that your resume and letter use the same dates, titles and qualification status.
