Stacey had been made redundant and was feeling lost. Unfortunately, when our career specialist spoke to her, she had no idea what to do next, or how to move forward. She had been out of a job for 12-weeks and the company had not provided outplacement services as part of her redundancy package. Stacey was in her mid-thirties and while it was a sunny Monday morning and she had her coffee in hand, we could tell that she had just woken up from a very restless night. She told a story of greeting her loving husband with a smile, but there was no joy behind that smile, instead, as soon as the door closed, she shed a tear. As she brushed her checked and packed her son’s lunchbox, she was worried about being 3-weeks behind on rent and she knew her husband’s coffee and son’s snacks were the last in the pantry. Although her husband worked full time, his income was not enough to survive on and as a mum, she felt it was her job to look after her precious boys. As she had lost her job, she felt like she failed.
Stacey told us that she had made applying for jobs a full-time career since she had left. However, she had applied for over 50 positions and received only automated rejection emails. She was an experienced Communications Manager, including working as a Marketing Assistant, Branding Consultant, and Marketing Manager, before heading the Marketing department before she was made redundant. Her company had been going through a rough period and decided to outsource all marketing activities overseas to cut costs. At the time, she oversaw training all the new staff and while she was doing so, she knew, she would be the next to be made redundant. The dreaded feeling crept in, so she started proactively looking for work, before being told her last day was X. Unfortunately, her last day arrived before she could find another role to go to.
She said after she finished, she felt relief and took the opportunity to take a holiday. She travelled to various places around Australia and re-ignited her relationships with her husband and son. She said towards the end of the job, she had needed to make all her team redundant, however, all the new staff needed constant support, so she was pulling a lot of unpaid overtime to help them get acquainted with their new positions. At the time, her husband was angry that the overtime was putting pressure on him to pick their son up from school care and stopping him from advancing his career. At the time, she felt loyal to the company and knew they were struggling financially, so felt it was in her best interest to ensure the new team was confident.
Now, 12-weeks later, jobless and running out of money, she was angry that the company had “used her”.
She was annoyed that the company didn’t even bother following up to see if she had a new job. They had simply given her the number of the employee assistance programs they recommended which she admittedly did use and did not find relevant or helpful. They were actually the ones that taught her about outplacement services. When she went back to the company and asked if they could help her gain access to an outplacement service provider and they said no, she was even more annoyed.
We quickly distracted her trip down the rabbit hole and avoided a deep dive into her personal and family obligations by helping her focus on her job hunt strategy and finding out why her 50 job applications had resulted in rejections. Unfortunately, when we uploaded her resume into an Applicant Tracking Software (ATS) which is commonly used across the recruitment industry to sort candidates automatically from those who are interview-ready to those who are rejected, Stacey’s resume was not extracting crucial information correctly, including her surname and phone number. Her phone number was not being picked up which is a mandatory field for a huge majority of employers who use ATS. Therefore, the time Stacey had spent searching for her next job was wasted. We also identified her job search evolution was heading in the wrong direction as her job hunt strategy was not pitched at the correct level for her experience. When questioned why she had applied for the job opportunities she had, she said that due to being rejected from several management jobs, she had started applying for entry-level marketing roles, which employers would dismiss her immediately for being overqualified. Hence, she was clueless.
