A CTO resume should explain the technology decisions you owned, the scale of your leadership and the business results your work supported. Start with the target organisation's needs: building a product, scaling a platform and leading a major transformation can call for different evidence.
Technical knowledge matters, but a list of tools does not explain executive responsibility. Show how you set priorities, made trade-offs and worked with other leaders.

Education and technical context
List your actual qualifications and relevant current credentials. Summarise platforms or architectures where they explain your experience; distinguish recent hands-on work from oversight of specialist teams.
Choose outcomes that show executive contribution
- Product and growth: what customer or business need shaped the roadmap?
- Delivery: what changed in release reliability, prioritisation or execution?
- People: what responsibilities did you establish and how did you develop leaders?
- Investment: what options did you assess and who approved the decision?
- Risk: how did you work with the responsible specialists to make risks visible and address them?
Use metrics with a clear period and baseline. If revenue grew during your tenure, explain the technology contribution without attributing every dollar to your team. Avoid revealing confidential architecture, security weaknesses or commercially sensitive plans.
Applying for your first CTO role
Keep your actual title, whether head of engineering, technology director or another role. Show where you already influenced decisions beyond your immediate team. A useful example might connect a technical recommendation to product priorities, staffing needs and budget choices.
Do not promote yourself on paper or treat a particular degree and number of years as universal requirements. Compare the organisation's role brief with your evidence and address material gaps honestly.
Structure the resume for the reader
Use a concise leadership profile, selected relevant achievements, recent experience and qualifications. Give each role a short explanation of the organisation and your remit before the achievement bullets. An approved public portfolio can add context, but keep essential evidence in the resume itself.
