Business development manager resume example
A business development manager resume should show the market you worked in, the opportunities you pursued and your contribution across the sales cycle. Explain whether you generated leads, qualified opportunities, negotiated proposals or owned the relationship through to handover. Keep pipeline forecasts separate from completed sales.
Illustrative example: These details are fictional. Adapt the structure using your own experience and verified facts.
Profile
Business development manager with experience identifying and developing B2B service opportunities. Combines account research, discovery conversations and proposal coordination with clear CRM records and delivery-team handovers. Seeking a role developing new business in [relevant market].
Experience: Business Development Manager, [Organisation], [dates]
- Researched target accounts in an assigned market and prioritised outreach using agreed customer-fit criteria.
- Led discovery conversations to clarify the prospect's needs, decision process and service requirements.
- Coordinated pricing and delivery inputs for proposals, recording assumptions and following up agreed next steps.
- Maintained opportunity stages in the CRM and handed signed work to the delivery team with a summary of the agreed scope.
Make commercial results meaningful
A useful result names the measure, period and your role. For example: “Generated [verified number] qualified opportunities in [period] through [channel], of which [verified number] progressed to [defined stage].” Use the stages recorded by your organisation rather than treating every enquiry as a qualified lead.
For revenue claims, state whether the amount is contracted, invoiced or recognised, and whether it represents your own portfolio or the team's result. Revenue, profit and contract value are different measures. If a deal is pending, describe the current stage; do not present the forecast as money earned.
Show the work behind the win
Choose examples of account research, stakeholder engagement, discovery, proposal development, negotiation and internal coordination. Explain how you addressed a real obstacle, such as an unclear requirement or a delivery concern. Keep customer names and contract details within what you are authorised to disclose.
A result can be useful without a large number. A clearer qualification process or a more complete handover can demonstrate judgement when you explain the problem, your change and the evidence of improvement.
Moving into business development
Applicants moving from account management, customer service or sales can show transferable evidence: identifying an unmet need, building a relationship, coordinating a proposal or following through on a commitment. Keep your actual title and distinguish existing-account growth from new-customer acquisition.
For a more senior vacancy, include relevant market planning or mentoring only where you performed it. Managing a personal opportunity pipeline does not automatically mean you managed a sales team.
Skills and application checklist
Include the CRM, industries, customer segments and methods you have used. Support negotiation and stakeholder-management claims with experience bullets. Match the vacancy's sales cycle and market where possible, then check dates, targets and results against your records. Use a readable layout and the requested file format.
