A general manager resume should make the business or unit you led understandable: its purpose, operating scope, team and your authority. Connect the priorities you inherited with the decisions you made and the outcomes achieved. Broad leadership language needs concrete evidence behind it.

Define the mandate and commercial scope

Explain why you were appointed and what you were accountable for. A whole-business role differs from managing a site or division. State the reporting line, functions and approximate team or budget scope where disclosure is appropriate.

Be precise about profit-and-loss responsibility. Owning a budget, influencing revenue and holding full P&L accountability are different claims. If you led managers, explain the structure; do not count every person in the organisation as a direct report.

Show how the result was achieved

Choose a result relevant to the vacancy, then explain the initial position, your decisions and the measured outcome. Revenue growth, margin improvement, service reliability and staff development may all matter, but each needs its own evidence.

State the period and comparison for financial figures. Distinguish percentage growth from percentage-point margin changes and savings realised from savings forecast. Identify the team's contribution and external factors where material. Confidential figures can sometimes be expressed as appropriately approved ranges, but never invent a substitute number.

Progression and leadership evidence

If you are moving from a functional or assistant-manager role, show the cross-functional decisions you already contributed to. Keep your actual title and authority clear. An improvement delivered with finance, operations and customer teams can demonstrate breadth without claiming you ran the whole business.

Describe how you developed leaders, assigned accountability and followed through on decisions using specific examples. Avoid a long list of generic strengths. Tailor the resume to the organisation's needs and include relevant qualifications or development without assuming every general manager follows the same career path.
