What's it like to be a Winemaker?

Winemakers have a range of tasks and duties (source): 

  • Applying scientific theories to the wine-making process.
  • Coordinating the packaging and distribution of finished product.
  • Providing advice on the preservation of grape samples and the processing of wine.
  • Using scientific knowledge to blend different wine varietals together to make a new product.
  • Coordinating and supervising winemaking processes, including testing and crushing grapes, fermenting juices, fortifying, clarifying, maturing and finishing wines.
  • Working closely with viticulturists to manage planting programs and the cultivation and production of grapes.
  • Planning for bottling of wine once it has matured and make sure that quality is tested and maintained when the wine is bottled.
  • Liaising with marketing and sales teams to ensure production is aligned to market demands.

How can you become a Winemaker?

  1. Complete a qualification in Winemaking. This could be a Certificate III in Wine Industry Operations (FDF30411), Diploma of Viticulture (AHC51516), or a Bachelor of Viticulture and Oenology.
  2. Build your experience while studying by securing a seasonal or temporary position on a vineyard in one of the primary winemaking regions – NSW, Victoria or WA.
