A Queensland job search needs a clear location plan and an application tailored to the employer. This guide covers SmartJobs, Queensland Health applications, regional availability and practical examples you can use to build your own resume and written response.

Find Queensland government vacancies and application help
Start with Queensland Government SmartJobs and read the location, role description and application instructions for each vacancy. For a broader search, Migration Queensland's finding-a-job resources include job-search websites and advice on finding and applying for work.
Keep separate shortlists for the places you can work, such as Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast or a particular regional centre. Check whether a role is based at one site, covers several locations or requires travel. If relocation is involved, confirm practical arrangements with the vacancy contact instead of assuming assistance is included.
Prepare the documents requested for the role
The Queensland Department of Housing and Public Works' application guidance directs candidates to the advertisement's “How to apply” section and the role description. It says most of its applications need a resume and cover letter, with specific criteria responses sometimes required. Treat that as an example of why you must check each agency's instructions, not a single rule for every Queensland job.
- Save the role description. Record the job reference, closing date, location and exact documents requested.
- Choose evidence for the stated requirements. Match the level of responsibility in your examples to the role you are applying for.
- Write a focused response. Use the requested format and limits. Explain your actions and results instead of copying duties from your resume.
- Review both documents together. Dates, job titles and examples should be consistent, with each document adding useful information.
Illustrative example to adapt: for a customer-service role involving several service locations, describe how you coordinated an enquiry that needed input from another team. Explain how you checked the information, kept the customer informed and recorded the outcome. If you improved response time, use a verified result and explain the period measured. Never copy an example as though it happened to you.
Our selection criteria writing support can help you develop evidence for a written response. For occupation-specific ideas, browse our resume guides by role.
Check your SmartJobs submission
According to the current SmartJobs help guide, you can attach up to three documents; preferred formats are PDF or Word, with files under 2 MB preferred. Use clear filenames and check the attachments before submitting. A saved draft has not been submitted: look for the onscreen confirmation and confirmation email. The help guide also explains how to check application status and who to contact if a technical problem prevents submission before the deadline.
Applying to Queensland Health
The same official SmartJobs help guide says Queensland Health now has a separate careers portal. For a new Queensland Health role, follow the vacancy's “Apply Now” link to the appropriate portal. Check its instructions rather than assuming SmartJobs attachment limits or a previous application carry across.
Explain your location and availability honestly
“Open to Queensland roles” is less useful than a clear statement of where you can work. For example: “Based on the Gold Coast; available for local roles from [date], with travel subject to the advertised requirements.” For a regional move, state your intended location and realistic availability. Only include registration, licences or other credentials you actually hold, using the vacancy to decide which are relevant.
If your background spans several industries, lead with evidence that matches this application. A finance vacancy may need accurate reporting and reconciliation examples; a maintenance vacancy may need scheduling and contractor coordination. Avoid sending the same opening paragraph to both employers.
Before you apply
- Confirm the work location, travel expectations and start-date requirements.
- Check the correct portal and retain the job reference and role description.
- Proofread the final attachments and submit early enough to resolve upload problems.
- Save your confirmation and track the application separately from other vacancies.
