A data analyst resume should connect technical work to a useful question. Explain the data, tools, checks and output, then describe how someone used the analysis. A list of SQL, Excel, Python and Power BI is stronger when the experience section shows what you actually did with those tools.

Entry-level data analyst project example

Fictional project: Public transport reporting exercise. Used an openly available dataset to explore how service activity varied by location and period. Cleaned inconsistent labels, checked missing values and compared totals before and after transformation. Built an interactive dashboard and documented the source, assumptions and limitations in a short project summary.

For your own project, name the source you are allowed to use, the question, your contribution and the output. Link to an accessible portfolio or repository only when it contains information you have permission to publish. Label academic, personal and workplace projects accurately.

Write achievement bullets that can be checked

Try: “Used [method/tool] to investigate [question] across [data scope], checked [quality issue] and delivered [output] used for [decision or process].” This gives the reader a clear chain from analysis to use.

If you claim time saved, state the before/after process and measurement period. If a team changed a business result, explain your contribution without assigning the whole improvement to a dashboard. A recommendation, a decision and a realised commercial outcome are different stages; name the stage you can substantiate.

Which data analyst skills belong on a resume?

• Querying and preparation: relevant SQL work, joins, transformations or spreadsheet methods you have used.
• Quality checks: duplicates, missing data, reconciliation and documented definitions.
• Analysis: the comparisons, statistics or investigations relevant to the role.
• Visualisation: reports or dashboards built for a defined audience.
• Communication: explaining findings, limitations and next steps.

Use a focused technical-skills section and reinforce important skills with project or employment evidence. Do not label yourself advanced in every tool mentioned in the advertisement. Distinguish training exposure from regular professional use.

Structure for junior and experienced applicants

For an entry-level role, put a concise profile, relevant skills and strong projects before unrelated employment. Include useful study and part-time work evidence. Experienced applicants can lead with recent analytical roles, followed by selected projects and qualifications. Tailor domain detail to the target industry rather than using one generic version for every vacancy.
