Lifeguard resume example

A lifeguard resume should make your relevant training, aquatic experience and approach to patron safety easy to find. State whether your background is in a pool, beach or another aquatic setting. Then describe what you actually did: supervision, prevention, communication, incident reporting or team handovers.

Illustrative example: The following details are fictional. Use the structure with your own verified experience; do not copy the claims.

Profile

Pool lifeguard with experience supervising public swimming sessions at a community aquatic centre. Confident communicating facility rules, completing assigned safety checks and handing over observations to the next team. Holds [actual qualification] with [verified current status] and is seeking a role in [target setting].

Experience: Pool Lifeguard, [Aquatic Centre], [dates]

  • Monitored the assigned pool zone during public sessions and followed the centre's rotation and handover procedures.
  • Explained pool rules to patrons, addressed unsafe behaviour within my responsibilities and escalated concerns to the shift supervisor.
  • Completed opening equipment checks using the centre's checklist and reported items requiring attention before the session began.
  • Recorded an incident promptly and provided a factual handover so the supervisor could complete the required follow-up.

Training and qualifications

[Exact qualification or course name] — [provider], [completion date and current status]. List first aid, CPR and other relevant training separately where applicable. Verify each entry against your records and the employer's requirements; a course attended is not the same as a qualification awarded.

What to include in a lifeguard resume

  1. Contact details: name, phone, email and location, plus relevant availability if requested.
  2. Short profile: aquatic setting, experience level and two strengths supported later in the document.
  3. Training: the credentials and currency information relevant to this vacancy.
  4. Employment or volunteering: organisation, role, dates, responsibilities and examples.
  5. Other relevant experience: customer service, teamwork or assisting with activities, clearly labelled.

Turn safety duties into useful evidence

“Responsible for safety” is broad. Explain the setting, your action and the follow-up. An example of spotting a hazard, communicating it and recording the action can be useful without claiming that you prevented a specific injury. Describe a real incident only at an appropriate level of detail and omit identifying information about patrons.

If you use numbers, make clear what they measure. Facility attendance is not the same as the number of people you personally supervised. Avoid unsupported claims such as a perfect safety record or a percentage reduction in incidents.

Applying for your first lifeguard job

Put relevant completed training near the top, followed by supervised practical learning, volunteering and transferable experience. A retail or hospitality example can show calm communication and reliable teamwork. Label training scenarios as training; they should not read like paid rescue experience.

Check the advertisement for the employer's qualification, fitness, availability and assessment requirements. Do not describe a planned course or expired credential as current. Pool and beach positions can require different preparation, so tailor the resume to the actual role.

Skills and format checklist

Choose skills you can demonstrate, such as observation, patron communication, teamwork, record keeping and relevant aquatic competencies. Use the employer's terminology where it accurately describes your experience. Keep headings clear and text selectable, and follow the requested file format. Check dates, spelling and qualification names before sending.
