Career Coaching and Resume Services: The Choice
Career coaching and resume services would be easier if all decisions were black and white, but unfortunately life isn't always so simple. Oftentimes we help managers who are left feeling doubtful and uneasy after making a career defining choice, unsure of whether they have chosen the right path.
Managers are forced to make complex decisions every day, from setting strategic goals to handling a difficult discussion and they are rarely black or white – just various shades of grey.
According to Joe Badaracco from Harvard Business School, getting decisions right that lie in a grey area is crucial for managers because they increase a manager's career prospects and help them feel more engaged in their work.
The best way to answers to grey questions is to gather and assess data, get input from experts and people on-the-ground. In other words, putting a process around making decisions helps you to understand as much about the problem at hand and what options looks better. Sometimes, after you analyse the data, you'll realise that there is no problem at all. Therefore, the decision that needs to be made is inaction.
If you do need to make a judgement call, try not to make it a split-second one. A careful decision-making process evaluates the net-net consequences, weighing up the effect on everybody involved, assets, relationships or even the industry etc. The goal when making decisions is to see the bigger picture.
But what happens when you need to make a moral compass decision and you have no data?
Imagine you're visited one night by three police officers, who tell you there are six people on life support at a nearby hospital, urgently in need of organ transplants. You are a rare match for them all, so the officers have come to take you to the hospital. You're to give your one life to save the other six. Which patient do you choose?
Luckily, often our decisions are not life or death, however, they may very well impact other people negatively, influencing their quality of life etc.
When you consider people-related or animal-related scenarios, often there is no win-win solution, only the better alternative. Therefore, you may need to balance up the short and long-term effects before making a decision. To do this, you need to consider your responsibilities, the greater good, your personal values, and the long-term scenarios. Questions start to creep in about who you are as a person, what do you believe in, what can you live with etc. When you come up blank from this exercise, it's time to fall back and listen to your intuition.
Would you like to share a real-life example about something that is holding you back from making a decision that would be the best one for your long-term career? Or perhaps you have been holding off on making a decision to apply for a new job? If it's the latter, career coaching and resume services can help with your resume, cover letter, LinkedIn profile and more. Simply send your resume to info@theperfectresume.com.au.
