A sales cover letter should show how you understand customers, manage the sales process and contribute to results. Match your evidence to the role: retail sales, outbound prospecting and account management involve different work. Start with a relevant example rather than a generic claim that you can sell anything.

This fictional letter uses placeholders for results. Replace them with accurate, permitted information from your own experience.

Entry-level sales cover letter example

The following fictional alternative uses transferable experience without claiming an established sales record.

Through [retail, hospitality, study or volunteering], I have developed experience listening to customers, explaining options and following up requests. Your role's emphasis on [specific responsibility] interests me because [relevant reason].

In [setting], I helped [customer or group] by [specific action], checked that I understood the request and referred questions outside my knowledge to [appropriate person]. I also kept [records or task list] current so that outstanding requests were followed through.

I am ready to build my knowledge of [product or sales process] and would bring a reliable approach to preparation, communication and feedback. Choose evidence for the type of sales role

• Retail: understanding customer needs, explaining products and supporting a reliable purchase experience.
• Sales development: research, outreach, qualification and accurate handovers.
• Account management: customer relationships, renewals, issue resolution and expansion where relevant.
• Sales leadership: coaching, pipeline discipline and the team's results alongside your leadership contribution.

Use sales numbers accurately

State the measure, period and context. “Achieved [percentage] of quarterly target” is different from “grew revenue by [percentage] compared with the prior quarter”. Keep individual and team results separate. Do not substitute a pipeline value for closed revenue or invent a target when your previous role did not have one.

Where information is confidential, use approved detail or explain the method and contribution without disclosing account names or restricted figures. Useful evidence can also be a clear follow-up process or resolving an issue that prevented a customer from progressing.

Finish the application
