An executive resume needs to make your leadership scope and contribution clear. The reader should quickly understand the organisations you have worked in, the decisions you owned and the outcomes relevant to the role you want.
Use the copyable text template below in Word or your preferred editor. It is a starting structure for Australian executive applications, not a finished client resume. Replace every bracket and adjust the emphasis to the role brief.

Executive summary example
Illustrative wording, not a client claim: “Operations leader with experience coordinating multi-site service delivery and leading cross-functional teams. Accountable for workforce planning, operating budgets and performance reporting. Led a redesign of service handovers and introduced a common reporting cadence across regional teams. Seeking an executive role focused on consistent delivery and sustainable operational improvement.”
This example names the operating context and responsibilities. To strengthen your version, add the relevant scale and verified results. Replace generic claims such as “visionary leader” with evidence of the decisions you made. Do not add P&L ownership if you only contributed to a budget.
Turn responsibilities into executive achievements
Duty: “Responsible for business transformation.”
Evidence-led structure: “Led [programme] across [functions/locations], prioritising [specific changes] and delivering [verified outcome] within [timeframe].”
Before writing the final bullet, answer four questions:
- What business problem or opportunity mattered?
- What did you personally decide, sponsor or lead?
- What changed, and what evidence supports that result?
- Why is this relevant to the target executive role?
Distinguish a team result from your own contribution. State whether a financial result is revenue, profit, cost reduction or avoided cost. Specify the period and avoid presenting a forecast as a realised outcome. If figures are confidential, use an approved level of detail or describe the result without the restricted number.
What to emphasise for different leadership roles
- CEO or general management: strategy, business performance, organisational scope and stakeholder relationships.
- Finance leadership: financial stewardship, commercial decisions, controls and the effect of your advice.
- Operations leadership: service or production performance, capacity, cost, quality and implementation.
- People leadership: workforce strategy, organisational change and supported people outcomes.
Select evidence against the actual brief; these categories are prompts, not a universal keyword list. A board application may require different emphasis on governance and oversight. Keep board appointments distinct from operational management roles.
Applying for your first executive role
Show where you have already worked across functions, influenced senior stakeholders or taken responsibility beyond your immediate team. Describe the scale honestly. Keep your actual title and explain executive-level exposure through evidence rather than promoting yourself on paper.
For a broader career transition, the career-change resume example shows how to connect transferable experience to a new role.
Format and final review
Use a clear sequence: profile, selected achievements, recent experience, earlier career and relevant qualifications. Keep essential information as selectable text with standard headings. Check the recipient's format and length requirements; give recent relevant roles more space than early career detail.
Read the first page on its own. Does it show your leadership level, operating context and relevant contribution? Then check every metric, date and title against your records. A template helps organise the evidence; it cannot supply missing achievements.
