An executive cover letter should connect your leadership experience to the organisation's stated priorities. Choose two or three relevant decisions and outcomes, explain the scope you owned and show why that experience fits the mandate. A list of senior titles alone cannot make that connection.

Dear [Name or Selection Committee],
Re: [Executive role and reference]
I am applying for the [role] at [organisation]. My experience leading [operating environment] and coordinating [relevant business scope] aligns with the role's emphasis on [priority from the brief]. I am particularly interested in [specific, verified aspect of the opportunity].
As [actual title] at [organisation], I was accountable for [team, locations and decision authority]. When [business challenge] affected [service or commercial outcome], I led [specific intervention], working with [functions or stakeholders]. This resulted in [verified outcome] over [timeframe]. My contribution centred on [decision or leadership responsibility], supported by the work of [team].
I also led [second relevant initiative]. By [action], we achieved [supported outcome or implementation milestone]. This experience strengthened my approach to [governance, people leadership or operational delivery], particularly when [constraint relevant to the new role].
Your brief identifies [stated priority]. I would bring experience in [relevant capability] and a considered approach to understanding the organisation's people, operating conditions and measures of success before setting delivery priorities. My attached resume provides further detail on the scale and results of my work.
Thank you for considering my application. I welcome the opportunity to discuss how this experience could support [organisation's stated objective]. You can reach me on [phone] or [email].
Kind regards,

Why this structure works
- Opening: names the mandate and gives a specific reason for applying.
- Evidence: explains the challenge, your decision, the scale and the outcome.
- Contribution: connects experience to the new brief without pretending to know the organisation's internal problems.
- Close: makes the next conversation easy and points to supporting detail.
Adjust the evidence for the leadership role
- CEO/general manager: business direction, operating scope, stakeholder relationships and sustained organisational performance.
- Finance executive: financial stewardship, commercial advice, controls and the decisions your analysis supported.
- Operations executive: service or production delivery, capacity, quality and implementation across teams or locations.
- People executive: workforce priorities, organisational change and evidence of effects on people and delivery.
Check claims, scope and confidentiality
Keep your actual title. Distinguish owning a budget from contributing to one, and realised outcomes from forecasts. State the period behind a financial result and use only information you are authorised to disclose. A board application may need different emphasis on governance and oversight; don't treat it as an operational executive letter.
Length, format and supporting documents
A concise page is a useful starting point when no other requirement is given. Follow the brief where it asks for a longer statement or separate criteria responses. Match the contact details and presentation to your resume, and check the Word file after editing. Use our executive resume template to organise the fuller career evidence.
