Interior designer resume example

An interior designer resume should explain the project types and design stages you have worked on, while your portfolio shows selected evidence. A finished-space photograph alone does not reveal whether you developed the concept, produced documentation, sourced finishes or coordinated delivery.

Illustrative example: this is fictional wording, not a client resume. Replace the placeholders and retain only statements supported by your own experience.

• Translated the agreed client brief into layout options for review, recording circulation and workspace requirements.
• Prepared presentation material and updated the selected concept after client feedback.
• Maintained the finishes schedule and checked supplier information against the approved selections.
• Revised documentation following coordination comments and recorded unresolved decisions for the project lead.

Link the resume to the portfolio

Use consistent project names and dates across both documents. For each selected project, explain the type, approximate scale where permitted, stage and your contribution. Identify collaborators and credit photographs or visuals appropriately.

Label concept work, student projects, unbuilt proposals and completed interiors accurately. A rendering is not a photograph of delivered work. Include a functioning portfolio link and check access without requiring the recruiter to request permission.

Show your work at each design stage

Separate briefing, concept design, development, documentation and site support. You do not need to claim every stage. A focused example of resolving a documentation issue or coordinating a finish substitution can show more than a broad claim to have “managed the entire project”.

Before: “Excellent Revit skills.” Stronger: “Updated the interior documentation model and drawing sheets after the project review.” Name the software and task you actually performed; a short course alone does not establish professional proficiency.

Describe constraints and outcomes

Explain how the brief, timing, available materials or approved budget affected your work. State whether a proposed option was accepted, documented or installed. Do not convert a project budget into a claim of spending authority, or claim client revenue growth without attribution evidence.

If a project is confidential, use a permitted description and share only approved visuals. Avoid publishing client addresses, unreleased plans or supplier commercial terms in a portfolio.

Graduate or experienced designer?

Graduates can select a small set of clearly labelled study projects and explain their process. Experienced designers should prioritise projects relevant to the studio's sector and the advertised role. Keep qualifications and titles accurate, and distinguish interior design from styling-only or architectural responsibilities.
