Internal Auditor Resume: Example, Skills and Evidence

An auditor resume is easier to assess when the type of audit is clear. This guide focuses on internal audit: explain the process or risk reviewed, the evidence you examined, your findings and how you followed up. Profile

Internal auditor with experience reviewing [actual processes or sectors]. Plans assigned testing, maintains clear working papers and communicates findings for review. Works with process owners to clarify evidence and tracks agreed actions within the audit team's follow-up process.

Experience

[Actual title] — [Employer], [month/year–month/year]

  • Documented the assigned audit scope and relevant risks with the engagement lead before developing the testing approach.
  • Examined [actual evidence type] against the agreed criteria and recorded the basis for conclusions in working papers.
  • Discussed exceptions with the process contact to confirm facts before drafting findings for review.
  • Prepared clear descriptions of the issue, supporting evidence and potential consequence within my assigned scope.
  • Tracked agreed actions and reviewed follow-up evidence, escalating overdue or unresolved matters through the audit process.

Qualifications and tools

List actual qualifications, professional memberships and certification status precisely. Distinguish studying towards a credential from holding it. Add the audit, analysis or reporting tools you used and the tasks you performed with them.

Describe an engagement from scope to follow-up

Choose a relevant, anonymised example. Explain the process reviewed, your role, the work performed and the output. For example: “Tested selected purchasing records against approved controls, documented exceptions and prepared the evidence summary for the engagement lead.” This is more useful than “ensured all compliance” because the reader can understand what was actually examined.

  • Scope: the process, period and responsibility you held.
  • Testing: the evidence and analysis you completed.
  • Communication: how you confirmed facts and presented the finding.
  • Follow-up: how you reviewed action status and supporting evidence.

A sample of records does not establish that every transaction was correct. Describe the extent of testing accurately and avoid promising that an audit eliminated all risk.

Keep ownership and confidentiality clear

Separate audit recommendations from actions implemented by management. If a recommendation contributed to savings or a stronger process, state how the result was measured and who implemented the change. Do not claim a whole organisation's risk reduction as your individual achievement without support.

Remove client names, confidential findings, identifiable employee matters and sensitive control details unless disclosure is expressly permitted. You can describe the nature of the engagement without publishing working papers. Use the standards and frameworks relevant to your actual work, with accurate names and scope.

Moving from accounting or external audit

Keep your existing title and explain transferable testing, documentation and stakeholder skills. Identify internal-audit exposure separately rather than relabelling an external engagement. A graduate can use a clearly labelled placement or study project and explain its supervision and limits.

Check that your resume matches the advertised seniority. Leading the annual audit programme is different from contributing to one engagement. For tailored help, review the internal auditor writing service.
