IT manager resume example
An IT manager resume should explain the services you were accountable for, the team you led and how you translated business needs into technology priorities. Describe the organisation and your authority. A list of platforms cannot show how you balanced support, planned changes, supplier commitments and available resources.
Illustrative example: this is fictional wording, not a client resume. Replace the placeholders and keep only statements supported by your own experience.
Profile
IT manager responsible for [services or environment] across [business scope]. Leads [team structure], agrees service priorities with business stakeholders and coordinates internal and supplier delivery. Reviews costs, service performance and outstanding risks to support informed decisions.
Experience: IT Manager, [Organisation], [dates]
- Agreed service priorities with business leaders and assigned delivery responsibilities across the team.
- Reviewed recurring support issues and coordinated an improvement plan with service owners.
- Compared supplier proposals against requirements, costs and support arrangements before recommending an option.
- Reported progress, resource needs and unresolved decisions through the agreed management process.
Explain the scope behind your title
State whether you managed a site, a business unit or organisation-wide services. Identify direct reports separately from contractors and supplier teams. Clarify whether you owned a budget, recommended spending or approved purchases within a limit.
Show technical credibility through decisions you can explain: an upgrade sequence, a support model or a replacement proposal. Keep hands-on administration distinct from management accountability. The systems administrator service addresses an operational administration role.
Make business outcomes measurable
For an improvement, describe the starting problem, the decision you led, the implementation and the observed result. Service availability, request turnaround and supplier costs measure different things. Define the service, period and source behind any figures you include.
Distinguish a forecast saving from an actual reduction in spending. A team result should identify your leadership contribution without claiming every task personally. If figures are confidential, use a permitted description of the improvement rather than inventing a number or disclosing internal budgets.
Show leadership beyond technical expertise
Include examples of developing colleagues, agreeing priorities and communicating trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders. Explain how you assigned accountability and followed up decisions. Avoid implying that an IT manager must personally build every system or manage every security function.
List relevant qualifications and current professional development accurately. For a move from a team-lead role, show the management responsibilities you already held while retaining your actual job title and reporting line.
