Librarian resume example
A librarian resume should connect information services, collections and systems with the people you support. State the library setting and your responsibilities. Public, academic, school and specialist libraries serve different users, so choose examples that make your experience relevant to the advertised role.
Illustrative example: this is fictional wording, not a client resume. Replace the placeholders and keep only statements supported by your own experience.
Profile
Librarian with experience supporting [user group] in [library setting]. Helps users locate and evaluate resources, contributes to collection work and maintains accurate information in [library system]. Develops accessible guidance and works with colleagues to improve service delivery.
Experience: Librarian, [Organisation], [dates]
- Clarified users' information needs and guided them towards relevant resources and search approaches.
- Reviewed assigned collection areas and documented recommendations against the service's selection priorities.
- Maintained catalogue or resource records within the team's standards and referred exceptions for review.
- Prepared a resource guide or learning session, using participant questions to improve the next version.
Match evidence to the library setting
For a public-library role, useful examples may involve community programmes, digital support or access to services. An academic application may need research support and information-literacy teaching. A specialist library may require stronger evidence of subject resources and targeted enquiry work.
Describe what you actually delivered, not every function associated with librarianship. Library assistant, technician, librarian and teacher-librarian titles should remain accurate; do not imply teaching or management credentials from a related role.
Make systems and collection skills concrete
Name the system and the work performed in it, such as maintaining records, reviewing usage or supporting access. Explain your part in cataloguing or collection development and the checks or decisions involved. Avoid copying software and standards you cannot discuss.
A service improvement might involve clearer finding aids, a revised guide or resolving a recurring access problem. Explain the need, your action and the observed result while protecting users' identities and enquiry details.
Measure service outcomes honestly
If you report attendance, resource usage or enquiry volumes, define the period and whether the result covers your work or the whole service. Session attendance does not by itself establish improved information literacy. Use feedback or another relevant measure only where available.
For a first librarian role, include clearly labelled placements, fieldwork and relevant study projects alongside transferable employment. List completed qualifications and professional credentials accurately, checking the particular vacancy. Keep a portfolio concise and ensure you have permission to share its examples.
